Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS review - CNET

With camera manufacturers throwing an increasing number of features at consumers, it's very easy to skip over simple models such as the Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS. Its specs are basic, its shooting options minimal, and its photo quality and performance, while very good for its class, are still fairly representative of an ultracompact point-and-shoot camera. However, if all you're after is a good-looking, go-everywhere, pocket camera, the SD1200 is pretty great--even if it's pricier than the competition.

The Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH (also known as the Canon Digital IXUS 95 IS) is a new 10 megapixel entry-level digital camera. Optical Image Stabilization, 3x zoom lens, a 2.5 inch LCD screen and new Smart AUTO mode complete the SD1200 IS’ headline features. The Canon SD1200 IS will be available in dark gray, blue, pink, green, light gray and orange in mid-March for $229.99 / £249.00 / €299.00 (silver, grey, blue and pink in the UK).

On the nuts and bolts side, the Canon PowerShot SD1200 is equipped with a fairly standard 3x optical zoom, encompassing a zoom range equivalent to 35-105mm. An additional 4x digital zoom is available as well. Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer Technology is an automatic feature on the SD1200 IS, coming into play whenever the camera senses that an image could be blurry due to slight camera movement - such as minor shakes at full telephoto or in dark conditions where the shutter speed is a little too slow for safe hand-holding. Also built into the PowerShot SD1200 is Canon's powerful DIGIC 4 Image Processor, which has even more finely-honed Face Detection and subject tracking, and incorporates this into a Face Detection Self-timer option.

The Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH Camera is a great entry-level ELPH camera and comes in six bright colors, including dark gray, blue, pink, green, light gray and orange. With features such as Smart AUTO and 10.0-Megapixels of resolution, printing large-size images with clarity and detail is a breeze. The PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH Camera is scheduled to be available in mid-March for an estimated retail price of $229.99.
