When it comes to the subject of escorts in London, everybody has an opinion. In fact, it’s quite rare to meet an individual who doesn’t have relatively strong opinions on the subject of escorts in general. Some are completely in favour of these kinds of services, while others aren’t quite so supportive of the industry.
In all instances however, there’s really only one resource to go to for factual insights as to what it’s really like to work as an escort in London. That being, the escorts themselves. Rather than making assumptions and potentially harmful judgments, it simply makes sense to find out what it’s like from those who know the industry best of all.
By listening to those who’ve worked as escorts in the past, it’s surprising how much the average person can learn about the industry. So to spread a little open-minded education, we asked a former London escort a few questions regarding their life during and after providing escort services in the capital:
How much money did you make?
You don’t beat around the bush, do you? Most people wait until a little further into the interview to bring up cash! To be honest, I couldn’t tell you. It’s not like I was keeping a running tally and nor did I have an accountant watching over things for me. I lived one hell of a lifestyle and earned enough to retire by the time I reached 34. So I can safely say I make more money than I would have in any other job, realistically.
What was your education level?
I have a First-Class Journalism Degree. I’ve always been an extremely inquisitive person, but it didn’t take me long to figure out I wasn’t going to step into the job of my dreams and immediately start earning decent money. Coming out of uni I struggled to find any kind of decent employment whatsoever.
How did you get started as an escort?
Like I said above, I needed money and wasn’t making any working shitty jobs I didn’t really want to do. I initially signed up with an agency on something of an experimental basis, just to see if I got any interest whatsoever. The response from guys (and quite a few girls) across London and beyond was pretty overwhelming. When I figured out how much money I could be earning in a week, I decided to give it a go. It turned out to be the best decision I ever made.
If you enjoyed it, why did you quit?
Why does anybody quit their jobs? They retire. The only difference with me being that I’d already put enough away to retire comfortably in my early thirties. I’d never intended to become an escort for the long-haul, it was really just to tide me over and help me save some money. I earned way more than expected, so decided to focus on enjoying myself and doing some travelling.
What types of clients did you have?
This is what surprised me most about working as an escort. I guess a lot of people assume that the kinds of guys who visit escorts are perverts, desperate loners and generally dodgy individuals. I’d say at least 90% were just normal, everyday men – most of which were at least reasonably successful, usually married and generally very pleasant. It’s inevitable that you occasionally meet the occasional freak, but by the time you’ve been working for a few months you know exactly how to deal with them. Some of the freaks are actually the most fun to work with!
How did your clients arrange your services?
I always worked exclusively through an agency, so they organised all the admin on my behalf. The good thing being that I was never put in a position where I felt as if I had to see any specific client or perform any kinds of services I wasn’t comfortable with. The agency helped create my profile and advertise my services, giving me plenty of options as to who I saw and who I didn’t. There was never any pressure whatsoever.
What kinds of services did your client’s request?
You name it! Like I said, the interesting thing was how simple and generic my clients and their requests tended to be. It was a while before I accepted the fact I probably wasn’t going to get request after request for the most bizarre and creative sexual favours you’ve ever heard of. Most people I met with who were looking for sex were all interested in the most vanilla stuff on the menu. They were generally really nice guys, out for a bit of action on the side and enjoying the naughtiness of the whole thing.
Did it bother you when your clients were married men?
At first, yes. After a while, no. Any guilt I felt completely went away when I realised I was providing these guys with far more than just sexual gratification. So many of the clients I met with treated me less like a sex worker and more like a counsellor. Or a friend to talk to. They often came to me because they were either having problems in their marriages, or weren’t getting any at home. A lot of them told me I’d actually had a positive impact on their relationships. If they hadn’t come to me, they’d have either cheated elsewhere or suffered in silence. Their words, not mine!
Did you ever find yourself in a dangerous situation?
Sometimes uncomfortable, never dangerous. The good thing about working with a responsible agency was that they took real interest in my safety and wellbeing. When clients organise escorts through an agency, they have to provide certain personal information that ensures their good behaviour. It’s not like picking up random clients on the street who can do whatever the hell they want and get away with it. Clients would sometimes ask for services that were strictly off limits, but it was never difficult to remind them what was and wasn’t on the menu. I never faced any situation I couldn’t handle with ease.
Was being an escort fulfilling, if so, how?
Absolutely. For one thing, I’ve always loved sex. I learned so much about my own sexuality as an escort. Not only this, but there’s no way I could have earned the same kind of money doing anything else within my reach. Plus, working as an escort helped me develop the kind of confidence and self-respect I could have never built elsewhere. I met some fantastic people, I genuinely believe I had a positive impact on many lives and I’ve been able to retire young. I’d say that’s a pretty fulfilling career for anyone.
What would you tell yourself if you could go back in time to the beginning?
Enjoy the ride! I spent the first few years under the assumption that I was either going to fail or running to the kind of trouble that would destroy my life. So rather than enjoying myself, I spent my time worrying. Now I know this wasn’t going to happen, I could have focused more on enjoying those seriously exciting early days, weeks and months. Either way, I’d do the whole thing again in a heartbeat.
